Chers collègues et amis,

C’est avec une immense tristesse que nous vous faisons part du décès de Jacques ACAR, survenu ce vendredi 27 mars, à l’âge de 89 ans.

Nous nous souviendrons de ce grand homme, qui a marqué tant de personnes, que ce soit ses élèves ou tous ceux qui l’ont rencontré, par son génie en microbiologie et maladies infectieuses, mais aussi par ses immenses qualités humaines.

Nous présentons nos sincères condoléances à toute sa famille et ses proches.

Nous avons décidé de publier des témoignages en son honneur.

J’ai connu la première fois Jacques Acar lors d’un stage d’interne de clinique à Saint-Joseph en 1991. C’est par lui que j’ai découvert la microbiologie clinique. Dans le monde où nous vivons où on aime souvent opposer les gens et les catégoriser, Jacques Acar m’a appris que l’on pouvait être microbiologiste et voir des malades ainsi que de faire de la recherche. Je le remercie, ainsi que Fred Goldstein et Laurent Gutmann, de m’avoir accordé leur confiance pour développer la microbiologie clinique sur Saint-Joseph puis à l’Hôpital Européen Georges Pompidou. Jacques Acar était avant-gardiste dans la transversalité ce que sont maintenant les équipes mobiles d’infectiologie. A une époque où nous sommes confrontés dans les hôpitaux à des demandes d’efficience avec un développement de technologie dans le domaine de la microbiologie, il considérait que les rapports humains et le dialogue clinico-microbiologiste devaient rester prioritaires. Je défendrais cette position jusqu’à la fin de mon exercice professionnel.
La dernière fois que je l’ai vu c’était à la RICAI 2019. Il était venu écouter mon topo parlant de paroi bactérienne et à la fin de la séance il m’a dit avec sa voix si caractéristique « Je vois que tu es resté fidèle au peptidoglycane et aux PLP… » Il aimait les gens fidèles

Ce matin m’est parvenue la triste nouvelle du décès de Jacques Acar survenue la nuit dernière à Paris à l’âge de 89 ans.
Chef de clinique en maladies infectieuses à l’Hôpital Claude Bernard, il s’était formé à la microbiologie dans les laboratoires d’Yves Chabbert à l’Institut Pasteur et de Maxwell Finland à Harvard, deux pionniers historiques et “papes” de la résistance bactérienne aux antibiotiques. Professeur à l’Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris 6, il avait été le chef du service de microbiologie des hôpitaux Saint Joseph et Broussais. Il avait pendant plusieurs années pris la responsabilité du CES de Bactériologie-Virologie aux Cordeliers. Il avait été un des fondateurs de l’European Society of Clinical Microbiology (ESCM) qu’il avait présidé puis transformé en ESCMID (European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases) dont il a été le premier président de 1993 à 1995. Son expertise dans le domaine des antibiotiques l’a amené à, entre autres, être membre de l’Advisory Group on Integrated Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistance (AGISAR) de l’OMS et expert à la World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). Au delà de ses responsabilités internationales, Jacques Acar a toujours milité pour une microbiologie médicale engagée “au lit du malade” et exhorté les jeunes microbiologistes à sortir de leur laboratoire pour interagir directement avec les cliniciens. Encore tout dernièrement il s’était engagé dans des actions et associations visant à lutter contre la résistance bactérienne.
Son enthousiasme permanent et sa chaleur ont été à l’origine de très nombreuses vocations. Nombre d’entre nous lui devons beaucoup.

Je considère Jacques Acar comme mon maitre.
Né au Sénégal, comme moi, il y avait connu mon père et lui avait tout jeune demandé conseil sur la recherche en nutrition.
Refusant d’obéir aux tenants du pouvoir de C. Bernard, il a fait sa vie hors des sentiers battus, élève de Yves Chabbert il est devenu une star internationale marginalisée à Paris et a été un des créateurs de l’ESCMID, de Isid, de Eur J Clin Microb Infect Dis et de CMI.
Il m’a poussé encore interne à publier la première étude sur c3g et typhoïde en1984.
La seule fois où j’ai été découragé, je suis venu lui demander un conseil paternel en 1987 qui m’a bien rassuré.
Je n ai jamais cessé de le voir. Nous partagions beaucoup d’analyses et il devait venir encore une fois cette année nous faire une conférence.
Pardon de ce ton mais je l’admirais et l’aimais. C’est un maitre qui nous a quitté et je ne pourrai plus me demander ce qu’il pense d’une question que je me pose.

C’est formidable de voir que Jacques Acar fédérait autant de gens autour de sa personne. C’est probablement parce qu’il n’avait d’a priori sur rien. La normalité ou l’anormalité n’était pas un critère ni dans sa vie ni dans son exercice. Il a toujours choisi ceux qui l’entouraient sur des critères de non critères ce qui nous a permis à tous de nous exprimer là où nous en avions la capacité.
Parler avec tout le monde était un son credo.
L’absence de rancune sa manière d’être.
